Frequently Asked Questions

Getting Started

Cipheus is a unique messaging app that transforms your conversations into secret cipher languages. Your messages are displayed as beautiful, mysterious symbols using customizable language packs. Only you and your friends who share the same language pack can decode the messages. It's a fun, creative way to communicate privately.
Download Cipheus from the App Store and open the app. You can sign in using your Apple ID or Google account. After signing in, you'll set up your profile with a username and display name, and you're ready to start chatting!
There are three ways to add friends: 1) Search for their username in the Friends tab, 2) Scan their QR code using the built-in scanner — you can find your own QR code in Settings > My QR Code, or 3) Share your personal invite link with friends through any messaging app or social media.

Language Packs

Language Packs are custom cipher alphabets that define how your messages are transformed into symbols. Cipheus comes with 6 preset packs — Nordic Rune, Star Code, Elvish, Pixel, Moon Script, and Shadow Script — each with a unique visual style and atmosphere. You can also create your own custom packs.
Go to the Packs tab and tap "Create Custom." Give your pack a name, then choose or draw a symbol for each letter of the alphabet. You can hand-draw symbols or select from preset options to build a cipher that's uniquely yours.
Yes! You can set a default Language Pack for all chats, or assign different packs to individual conversations. This way you can have a unique secret language with each friend. To change the pack for a specific chat, tap on the pack selector at the top of the conversation.

Messaging

Messages automatically appear in cipher form using your selected Language Pack. To reveal the original text, simply long-press on any message. The decoded text will appear temporarily. Tap anywhere else to hide it again. You can enable or disable this long-press-to-reveal feature in Settings > Privacy.
The Cipher Keyboard is an immersive input mode that displays cipher symbols directly on the keyboard. Instead of typing regular letters, you tap the symbols from your active Language Pack. The layout follows a standard keyboard, making it intuitive to use. You can switch between Normal and Cipher Keyboard modes in Settings > Keyboard, or toggle it within any chat.
Cipheus supports messaging in multiple languages. Latin-based characters (English, etc.) get direct 1:1 symbol mappings. Non-Latin scripts like Chinese use a special hex encoding system that transforms each character into a sequence of cipher symbols. The App interface is available in English and Simplified Chinese.

Privacy & Security

All messages in Cipheus are protected with end-to-end encryption (E2EE) using the Olm cryptographic protocol. This means only you and your recipient can read the messages — our servers only store encrypted ciphertext. Additionally, all network communication uses HTTPS/TLS, and the cipher visual transformation happens locally on your device. We do not share your personal data with third parties for advertising or tracking.
You can protect your privacy settings with Face ID or Touch ID. When enabled, accessing the Privacy Settings page will require biometric authentication. This prevents others from changing your privacy preferences if they have access to your unlocked phone. Your biometric data stays entirely on your device and is never sent to our servers.
Yes! Go to Settings → Chat Backup to export your chat history as an encrypted .cipheus file. You'll set a password, and the app will generate an encrypted backup that you can save to iCloud Drive, Files, or share via AirDrop. To restore, import the .cipheus file and enter your password. The entire process happens locally on your device — no data passes through our servers. Important: if you forget your export password, the backup cannot be recovered.
To block a user, go to their profile and tap "Block." Blocked users cannot send you messages or friend requests. You can manage your blocked list in Settings > Blocked Users. To report a user, tap the report button on their profile and select a reason (spam, harassment, hate speech, etc.). Our team reviews all reports and takes appropriate action.

Cipheus+ Subscription

Cipheus+ is our premium subscription that unlocks more creative possibilities. With Cipheus+, you get all 6 preset language packs (vs. 3 in Free), up to 10 custom language packs (vs. 1), multiple chat themes, and unlimited friends. All core features like E2E encrypted messaging, cipher share cards, and invite links remain free for everyone.
Yes! All new users get a 1-month free trial of Cipheus+ with full access to all premium features. After the trial ends, you can subscribe to continue or use the free version. You can also extend your trial by inviting friends — each friend who signs up and sends their first message earns you +1 month free!
When your Cipheus+ ends, you'll switch to the free tier. You keep 1 custom language pack (you choose which one) and 3 preset packs. Extra custom packs are frozen — not deleted — so they'll be restored instantly if you resubscribe. Your chat theme reverts to default, and the friend limit becomes 100. All your messages, chats, and friends remain intact.

Account Management

Go to Settings and tap "Edit Profile." You can change your display name and profile picture. Your username is set during initial setup and cannot be changed afterwards. Profile pictures can be selected from your photo library and will be cropped to a circular shape.
Go to Settings and scroll to the bottom to find "Delete Account." For security, biometric authentication (Face ID / Touch ID) is required if available on your device. Deletion is permanent — all your profile data, messages, friendships, and custom language packs will be removed. This action cannot be undone.
Go to Settings > Language. You can choose between System Default, English, or Simplified Chinese (简体中文). When set to System Default, the app follows your device's language setting.

Troubleshooting

First, check that notifications are enabled within Cipheus at Settings > Notifications. Then verify that your device's system settings allow notifications for Cipheus (iPhone Settings > Cipheus > Notifications). If the issue persists, try signing out and back in, or reinstalling the app to refresh your notification token.
Messages can only be properly decoded when both users share the same Language Pack. Check the pack selector at the top of your chat to make sure you're using the same pack. If your friend sent a message with a different pack, you'll see it encoded with their pack's symbols. Ask your friend to switch to a shared pack, or use the long-press feature to view the original text.
Check your internet connection first. Cipheus requires an active network connection to send and receive messages. If you're connected but still having issues, try closing and reopening the app. If the problem continues, sign out and sign back in to refresh your session.
